Omega’s FOS series fiber-optic temperature sensors are designed for industrial settings where electromagnetic and radio-frequency interference can disrupt conventional electronic probes. The system uses optical signal transmission to isolate measurements from electrical noise, with a stated operating range of -200°C to 250°C and accuracy of ±0.8°C. Two probe variants, the FOS-LT and FOS-LU, address different coating and durability requirements.
The FOS series is intended for electromagnetic interference (EMI), radio-frequency interference (RFI), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) environments, where traditional electronic sensors can experience signal attenuation, measurement deviation, or complete failure. Rather than relying on resistance or voltage measurement, the sensors transmit temperature signals over optical fiber.
This design physically isolates the measurement path from electromagnetic noise and is intended to maintain signal accuracy over long cable runs. In microwave radiation or strong magnetic fields, the sensors are specified to retain measurement performance without recalibration under normal operating conditions.
The published specifications list a compact probe design and a measurement range suited to both cryogenic and elevated-temperature applications.
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Measurement range | -200°C to 250°C |
| Accuracy | ±0.8°C |
| Repeatability | 0.2°C |
| Response time | As fast as 200 ms |
| Probe diameter | 1.6 mm (1/16 inch) |
The FOS series is offered in two principal configurations, with the main difference in probe coating material.
All models are equipped with ST connectors and are available in 2-, 3-, 5-, and 10-meter lengths to accommodate different installation spaces.
A compatible fiber-optic temperature monitor is required for data readout and is not included with the sensor package. Monitoring equipment must support the ST connector interface.
