Omega FOS Series Enables Highprecision Fiber Optic Temperature Sensing in Extreme Environments
últimas notícias da empresa sobre Omega FOS Series Enables Highprecision Fiber Optic Temperature Sensing in Extreme Environments

Omega’s FOS series fiber-optic temperature sensors are designed for industrial settings where electromagnetic and radio-frequency interference can disrupt conventional electronic probes. The system uses optical signal transmission to isolate measurements from electrical noise, with a stated operating range of -200°C to 250°C and accuracy of ±0.8°C. Two probe variants, the FOS-LT and FOS-LU, address different coating and durability requirements.

Core technology

The FOS series is intended for electromagnetic interference (EMI), radio-frequency interference (RFI), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) environments, where traditional electronic sensors can experience signal attenuation, measurement deviation, or complete failure. Rather than relying on resistance or voltage measurement, the sensors transmit temperature signals over optical fiber.

This design physically isolates the measurement path from electromagnetic noise and is intended to maintain signal accuracy over long cable runs. In microwave radiation or strong magnetic fields, the sensors are specified to retain measurement performance without recalibration under normal operating conditions.

Technical specifications

The published specifications list a compact probe design and a measurement range suited to both cryogenic and elevated-temperature applications.

Parameter Specification
Measurement range -200°C to 250°C
Accuracy ±0.8°C
Repeatability 0.2°C
Response time As fast as 200 ms
Probe diameter 1.6 mm (1/16 inch)
Selection guide: LT and LU variants

The FOS series is offered in two principal configurations, with the main difference in probe coating material.

  • FOS-LT series: Uses a PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) coating and is intended for routine high-EMI/RFI measurement applications.
  • FOS-LU series: Uses a polyimide coating and is specified to provide greater physical durability while maintaining the same measurement range and accuracy as the LT series.

All models are equipped with ST connectors and are available in 2-, 3-, 5-, and 10-meter lengths to accommodate different installation spaces.

A compatible fiber-optic temperature monitor is required for data readout and is not included with the sensor package. Monitoring equipment must support the ST connector interface.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the FOS series require a separate monitoring device?
Yes. The sensors must connect to a compatible fiber-optic temperature monitor to read data. The monitor is not included with the sensor set, and the monitoring equipment must support an ST connector interface.
Does the 1.6 mm probe diameter compromise mechanical strength in harsh environments?
The 1.6 mm diameter is intended for precision measurement in space-constrained installations. For applications requiring greater abrasion resistance, the FOS-LU series is specified with a polyimide coating that offers better physical protection than standard PTFE while maintaining the same slim profile.
Do the sensors need periodic recalibration?
The FOS series is described as highly stable under normal operating conditions and does not require recalibration, which can reduce long-term maintenance costs.
